2006 Pontiac Grand Prix Awful order when A/C is turned on

2006 Pontiac Grand Prix 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 42k miles

My wife and I bought this car in '06 from a GM dealer with 14k miles on it, it was a former rental. Everytime we turn the blower and especially the A/C on we get a blast of a kinfd of vinegar smell or old nasty gym socks. It eventually goes away? Does this car have a cabin air filter that needs replacing?

That where I would start too. While your in there pick up some deodorizer for the ducts at the parts store.
