I have read of several people having the exact same issue with their 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix that I am.

The car sounds like it starts fine initially, but when the cycle is complete the car is not running. However, this does not happen everytime I try to start the car. The car will start fine if I just press the gas pedal down a little. The check engine light is on and my console tells me to check the gas cap.

I had this problem about a year ago. I was having a problem with the car starting and the check engine light came on and told me to check the gas cap. I replaced that and still told me to check gas cap. I did a tune up replacing the plugs, wires, and ignition coils, but still stalled. Took it to a shop where they replaced a bad solenoid (which one I'm not sure, will have to look at my receipt) and it turned off the the engine light but the ignition problem persisted.

I will take my car back to AutoZone to have the codes looked at. I did it today, but can't remember the exact result. I believe it said something about emission leak or EVAP, or something like that. The only thing that I have read that the person says fixed the ignition problem was replacing the crank position sensor. Does anyone have any input or opinion as to what could fix this issue? Thanks!

Have ign. Module tested at most autoparts stores for free.

The EVAP code is not always a gas cap, the EVAP system has solenoids that energize and route fuel vapors back to intake.

A scan tool would be helpfull is dagnosis, if (in live data mode) RPM readings on scanner drop to zero, I would suspect ign. Module or crank sensor.
