Hello, I have a Pontiac Grand Prix that I believe may be burning oil, at first we could see that oil was leaking from the valve cover gaskets so i've replaced those. When I start the car up it smokes, after it warms and I shut it off and restart it doesn't smoke, I've had an oil change done recently and had it checked, I was told that there were no signs of oil leaking and I've also had the engine flushed which was recommended and was told that was one of the cleanest engine theyve seen for that many miles. I have an oil reader in the car and when the oil change was done it registered 100% that was done 10/30/2010 now today 11/09/2010 it registeres 96%, is that normal and and what could be causing it to leak if there is indeed a leak?

Hi, mrsmello01 how much oil are you having to add between your 3,000 mile oil change? With that many miles it's not uncommon for it to use some oil.

Hello and thank you, I'm having to add at least 1 1/2 quarts every three weeks to a month. When I start it up and see the smoke, it's white and looks like a bluish tint to it. It only smokes at the first start, after that it doesn't smoke anymore, and sometimes it doesn't smoke at all, but 90% of the time it does when it's first started.

Hi, that's an excessive amount to be adding every 3 weeks unless u put 3,000 miles on it in a month then that might be expected. Sounds like to me that your valve guide seals are bad, which caused oil to leak down into the combustion chamber in the engine that's why your seeing the blue smoke at start up. General Motors is natorious for this and always has been. That still seems like alot of oil to be using even with those being bad. You could be smoking while your driving and just not realize it, if that's the case your engine rings could be bad.
