I have a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix with 97,368 miles on the body and an estimated 18,000+ miles on the engine. I recently had a code pulled after my service engine light came on and it says that cylinder 3 is misfiring. Well, at times the car acts just fine and today with no signs the service engine soon light came on. There was no sign of the car misfiring, the temperature was normal, no other lights came on indicating any other problems. My question is, why did the light come on and should I be driving long distances, or even short for that matter, on a car with a misfiring cylinder or perhaps any other mechanical problem? Does it have anything to do with any fluids? Please let me know.

Hello, just about anything can cause a misfire, spark--fuel--vacuum leak, whatever. I'd check the basics, how long since a tune-up? Are the plugs and plug-wires ok? I'd pay particular attention to cylinders 3 and 6, they are paired on the same coil, if it turns out to be a spark issue. You could also switch the coil to a different position, see if the code follows the coil. It might be an injector issue, intermittent issues can be hard to track.
