Shakes or Wobbles problem
2003 Pontiac Grand Am 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 150 k miles

Hi Folks,

I have a 2003 Grand Am with a 6 cylinder engine which has started to shudder intermittently at hwy speeds as well as city speeds. The car is not doing it constantly. I may feel a slight slip at 55 mph lasting less than a second before it corrects or it may carry on for 30 seconds in which case the car will continually become closer to what feels like a stall. I was watching the tachometer during tonights episode and I was driving at 55mph and 2100 rpm when the car jumped to 3600 rpm before dropping back to 2000 rpm and then down as low as 1500. The rpm continued to fluctuate without my food on the accelator. I should mention this didn't happen during acceleration, I was steady on the accelerator maintaining my speed. I recently had a catalytic convertor replaced to correct this issue. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Sounds more like the trans is slipping. Check fluid level in trans. with engine running, car in park.

If level is OK, then I would change the trans filter and fluid. Look for any metal particles in the bottom of pan.
