My wife drove the car home and parked it in the driveway. I cam out later and tried to start the car. The key would not turn in the ignition. The gear shift was in park, but the wheels did not lock like normal. The dealership said it was a shifter solenoid or ignition problem. Cost was $500.00 to repair assumiing I could get it towed to the dealership. No mechanic I have talked to has ever heard of this problem nor experienced a "frozen" ignition. Can someone tell me what is happening here.

Thanks

I used to own a 2001 Grand Am 3.4l3400v6 engine. I had the same problem when it had 26,000 miles on it. It took them 5days to find the problem. 1st they made new keys, not the problem, then they told me the car thinks it's stolen. So I had to bring them the title. Lol! Finally they replaced the Ignition lock and Igniton switch. The computer thought it was stolen still. After that they called tech support and they told them a new fuse box was coming and to install it in the car. Well that worked! After all that! You might want to check in the engine compartment fuse box. You might have a blown fuse or the fuse is not making good contact. It should be marked IGN>Ignition. Hope this helps you out. I'm sorry to hear that it's going to cost $500.00. Mine was covered under warranty and a rental out of the deal!
