Hello,
I have a 1997 pontiac grand am SE and it started to give me overheating problems. Just a few days ago I was watching the temperature gauge rise higher and stabilize at a higher temperature while I was sitting in traffic. The gauge would then show nominal temperatures when I would be driving at a decent speed. I stopped to check what the problem was and I could see that there was coolant splatter on some parts of the engine close to where the coolant tank was. I just filled in my coolant tank 2 weeks ago and the tank is already half empty. I am not sure what the problem is, but im confident the leak may have something to do with it.

I would really apprecaite any help.

Thanks in advance.

First thing to check is that the cooling fan is operating. It should come on at about 220 degrees.
If the fan is not working, then the fan motor, fan switch or fan relay is bad.
If the fan is working, change the thermostat.

I would also replace all the hoses and clamps if they are original.
