Sounds like the shifter cable needs to be adjusted.

Remove the console, shifter sets on two front studs, install two rear bolts, install nuts on studs and connect shift cables. Reinstall console.

Or do you mean something else?

I am looking to buy a !997 Pontiac Grand Am for my son. I took it for a test drive but found that it was difficult to shift into drive/reverse. Once I got it into drive, it drove well. Then I parked it and shut it off. I started it up again and tried to shift to reverse and was once again difficult to get the button pushed in. What can be wrong?

It can either be the shifter is bad, cable or shift interlock isn't releasing all the way

How much would it cost to solve this problem? If I buy it for $600, Is that a good price? Once I keep pressing the button on the front of the shifter it finally releases.
Thank you so much for your response and look forward to your next reply.

Costs vary all over so you really have to have this checked locally for that. It really sounds like the shifter is worn but I have no pics to show so a local pro will have to look at that. The price doesn't sound bad but it's a 18 yr old car so expect some problems. You can always have a mechanic look it over as well prior to buying it

You will need to take console off and inspect linkage.
