Engine Performance problem
1980 Pontiac Firebird V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

The engine was rebuilt a little while ago. I had it up and running fine last week but it idled ruff because of the carb. So I went down and ordered in a new carb and when it got here I put it on and went to turn it over. When I turned it over it cranked a few times then it slowed down so I hooked up my truck to it so I could boost it and still a slow crank but when I turn my key on the battery gauge said I had good power but when I turned it to start that power was gone just wondering if anyone could help me out maybe you have had this problem before thank you

With everything turned off, use a digital voltmeter across the battery posts. The generic spec for a full charge is 12.6 volts. Leave the meter leads hooked up to the battery, have helper turn key to crank, the voltage reading shouldn't drop below 9 volts, some specs say 10 volts. If the reading dops too low, take the battery off and have it charged, also clean the battery cables on both ends. Some of the national brand autostores will test the battery for you.

Well, if the battery will start your truck. I'd have the starter tested. Some of the national brand autostores will test the starter for you and battery also. You have to take the starter off and take it to them. Another thought, there may be an internal engine issue, making the engine hard to turn over.
