Service engine lights are set for over a hundred different faults and serve as a warning to have it checked out, just like you are doing.
We need to know which codes are being set by your vehicles computer. There are two ways to find this. Because your vehicle is a pre OBD system a GM style connector is needed to read your codes, which AutoZone can't do. Call around and see if any shops will perform a free code check for you and give you the number and description.

Otherwise there is a manual method to retrieve the codes that takes a little practice to read.
BTW, a paperclip will substitute for the key they are talking about.
