1999 Plymouth Voyager when I hook up a OBD2 scanner it says

I have a check engine light. When I hook up a code reader it says error. Ive tried a few different code readers same thing. Why do I have a code reader error.

What do you mean by diagnostics? Do you mean my scanners? I can use them on another car and they work.
