What was leaking? What was fixed?
If you don't see any leakage on the ground, suspect a leaking head gasket. Once the coolant level drops enough, it will not flow easily through the heater core until you increase engine speed.
"And my heater doesnt work until the gauge goes up real high, and when it goes back down"
This sounds like the thermostat isn't opening which will happen too if the coolant is low. Hot air will not open the thermostat; it must be hit with hot liquid. Once the liquid splashes onto the thermostat, it will open and coolant will start to circulate through the radiator and heater core.
