Code P1283

I am having trouble diagnosing a p1283 code on my vehicle listed above. I have replaced both upstream sensors. There no obvious exhaust leaks I have done all the diagnosing as described in the factory service manual (FSM) so there is no shorted or open wires in the harness. Also I have done the accelerator pedal position re-learn, throttle valve closed position re-learn, idle air volume re-learn and the air fuel ratio reset that are all listed in the FSM. After all this I am still getting the code. This is after swapping in a used engine that had approximately 67,000 miles on it. I replaced all the gaskets from the heads up and installed new primary catalytic converters.

Hello,

Have you checked the air intake boot for any rips? This code can generate from a vacuum leak and most likely since you swapped a motor. Since this is a Lean code I would go after a vacuum leak first. I'm assuming you used all the old sensors and wiring harness besides the new 02's, then you have a vacuum leak somewhere which can easily happen when you're moving things around from pulling the motor. The best way to find a vacuum leak is to put smoke into the engine while sealing it up, and you should easily find a leak. Other than that it might be something in the wiring harness that got pinched while you were working on it.

Do you have access to a scan tool that can look at a live data stream? Here is actually a technical service Bulletin on this issue. Also you may have just gotten a bad sensor, maybe try switching the 02's from side to side and see if the code goes to Bank 1 instead of Bank 2. If you get a P1273 that's bank 1.

Well, I smoke tested the intake system and found a small leak on a power valve that is in the upper intake plenum or collector as Nissan calls it. Got new one ordered hopefully that fixes it.

P1283 Nissan Possible Causes. Faulty Air Fuel Ratio (A/F) Sensor 1 Bank 2; Air Fuel Ratio (A/F) Sensor 1 Bank 2 harness is open or shorted. I have seen the MAF sensor cause this issue dues to low readings. I would try a new sensor here is its location. Also please service the throttle body. These guides will help with instructions in the diagrams below on how to change the sensor out:

Good to hear, if you're still in doubt switch the front 02 sensors from bank 1 to bank 2 and see if the code goes to bank 1, that means a faulty 02, if no change then the problem lays somewhere else, just a quick test to rule out a bad new sensor. For Mass air flow sensor, I believe you can just unplugg the MAF and the ecm will go into a default strategy and there will be a noticeable difference in idle and driveability. After you get a fix, you should probably do the idle relearn procedure, since it's faster than the ECM having to relearn the idle, this way you can jump in and drive with less worry. There is a VE test (volumetric efficiency) that you can type in the numbers and it will give you % of how well the engine is breathing and this will tell you if the mass air flow is working correctly. It's a pretty simple test.

The small intake leak I found was not it and I have already replaced both the mass airflow trying to fix this code and the throttle body is new as well. I have done the idle re learn and it idles spot on at the factory spec of 625 +/- 50 rpm. The spark advance is spot on at idle as well. I have discovered now after fixing the intake leak that the B2 S2 is reading way low voltages like.02v and even once caught it going to flat 0.000v. So a new downstream o2 sensor is on the way.

Sounds good the P1283 - Air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor 1 (Bank 2) lean could be caused by a misfire are a clogged injector. Can you remove the spark plugs on bank 2 to check the color of the plugs? You are looking for a clean (white) plug or black (soot) to identify the problem cylinder. Please upload a picture of the plugs so we can see what's going on.

Ken, other than getting this code and seeing the computer richen the A/F mix for B2 the engine runs strong and smooth.

Yep, it will run smooth but we are dealing with a mixture problem. You could have an injector that is starting to go bad which will affect that. The spark plugs will tell us.

Well, I pulled the plugs and they were all had and equal small amount of soot from the computer enriching the mixture on bank 2 due to the code. I finally found a small exhaust leak due to a warped exhaust pipe flange. It has been a week now since fixing the leak with no code, so I think I have it fixed now.
