Hi, I have recently had a bit of work done on my car, the original faults were the timing chain, crankshaft sensor, thermostat and coolant sensor all needed replacing which has been done and the timing which was originally miles out is now in and the engine sounds nice and runs okay, whilst doing this the mechanic also found the third coil was completely gone so it then had a new coil pack and spark plugs. The codes P0016 and P0017 were not there before the work was done, however the engine management light has now come on and the diagnostics are showing these codes. Any ideas? The timing is fine, the sensors have been tested and are all working, the ecu has been wiped which briefly removed the eml however after two minutes it was straight back on?

Hi Matt,

The P0016 code means that the camshaft position sensor for bank 1 is correlating with the signal from the crankshaft position sensor, in other words there is a discrepancy between the timing of the crankshaft and the intake camshaft sensor (this discrepancy exceeds 10 degrees at idle. Possible causes; the timing chain has jumped teeth, problems with the phaser the camshaft phaser is out of position, the timing chain has jumped teeth, it could be caused by the oil flow to the phase has been impeded partially clogged passages, there could be some restriction in oil control valve filter or possibly the wrong oil viscosity.

Regarding the P0017 code; There is a discrepancy between the crankshaft and camshaft positioner bank 1 they are not in-sync with each other.

I would try replacing the oil control solenoid because they can plug not supplying oil pressure to the camshaft actuator. Here are diagrams to help.

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is. Cheers, Ken
