My engine is overheating why?

I have the car listed above SE model. I begin to notice that a smell would come from my car like it was overheating but my temperature gauge is normal as always. my fan still cut on like normal. then I noticed it had been using water so I filled it up twice the other day. any advice on what it could be? like I said the temperature gauge is normal, the fan cuts on I'm lost at this and I do know there is a lot of miles on my car.
