When the car stalled from overheating, what happened was that the internal engine parts (pistons and such) expanded so much from the heat that they could not move like they were supposed to. They cooled off a bit and the engine was able to start. However, damage was done. Most likely the cylinder head(s) is/are warped and gaskets might be blown.
When the engine is cold, go ahead and check the oil. If there is any milky/muddy, cruddy stuff in there, then head/head gasket damage has occurred. Compression tests will confirm that.
So check the oil and let us know what you find. We will go from there.
