Hello,

I have a Hyundai Accent car. I want to replace the body of Accent car by Mitsubishi Lancer 1998 model body (India).
- Can I do this in Delhi?
- What cost it will take?
- What could be the legal issues (like chassi number etc) in it and how can I resolvee it?
- How can I maintain and service it in future?

Please let me know any possible way other suggestions. If it requires to do replacement of body on any new car or any other car like Maruti etc. I want to have exactly Lancer looking car.

Thanks
Rahul.

You would be far better off to just buy a Lancer. That is because what you want to do is virtually impossible.

Both cars are uni-body construction. They do not have a "body" in the way an older car with a body on frame design does. The suspension, engine and everything else attaches to hard points that are made into the complete shell.
Nothing would interchange. Servicing would be entirely your problem because you just built the car.
Legally it depends on the local laws.
Cost would be very high. Probably about five times the cost of both cars combined.

Thanks for the answer. The model of that Lancer is closed in Delhii many years back and the new law is we can not use the car after fifteen years. So I was thinking about the ways how can I get the Lancer car. Company is not producing the same car and I want it any how. Can it be possible that I will buy a second hand scrap Lancer car and replace only the engine and other required things from accent or any other car of Mitsubishi company which I having more validity left to use in Delhi.

You would need to look close at the law and see what they allow and what do they use to determine the vehicles. For instance if you took a Lancer that was over fifteen years old, replaced the engine and transmission with new Mitsubishi items. Does the new engine and transmission make the car "new"?
I think they probably go by the actual year of the original vehicle itself and nothing else, but you would need to determine that.
We do not have that issue in the US, here you can run pretty much anything from any year. Some states have inspections and smog laws but even those have exemptions for historic and collectible vehicles.

Figure out what the law allows, then dig around and see if there are any exemptions.
You do not want to get something all built after spending a bunch of money, only to discover that it still is not legal or that it is only legal for a year.
Good luck.

Shape does not really matter when nothing interchanges.

Not being in India, I do not know who writes and enforces your vehicle laws. Plus the law could be written very vague like; "No motor vehicle over fifteen years old may be operated on the highway".
With nothing to tell you specifics.

Hi Steve,

I have done some little research on it. I have founded these thing till now..

- this is for Delhi motor vehicle law updated on 19-jul-2017.

link : http://www.delhi.gov.in/wps/wcm/connect/doit_transport/Transport/Home/Vehicle+Registration

Q.40 Can I alter the motor vehicle?
Ans. Under the provisions of section 52 of Motor Vehicle Act, the alteration of Motor Vehicle is allowed after prior permission of registering authority. If registering authority feels the sufficient ground to alter the vehicle, the permission is granted. The conversion like from fuel Petrol to C.N.G. is also allowed after the permission in case of engine assembly..

Then i have gone into details of this sec 52 in below link but i am not understanding it properly. Could you please help my to understand this releated to my concerns?

Thanks,
Rahul

HMM that's strange I typed up a long reply and it's gone.

Anyway, I read through the various items they have online and the only thing I could find was in regard to taxes, in that it said any vehicle 10 years or older was exempt.

In another spot it said that the only allowable alterations were engine replacement or alteration of the fuel supply - If it was petrol you could add a CNG kit.

I suspect there is a different rule book somewhere that covers it better as nothing I read even specified that you couldn't put a vehicle that was over 15 years old on the road. Where did you find that law? Perhaps those are the rules that you need to search.
