1996 Other Oldsmobile Models starter

1996 Other Oldsmobile Models Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I replaced the starter on my friends car and now when you turn the key all you get is a single click followed by a very soft whiring sound. Thinking maybe I missed a connection some where I pulled it back out and double checked everything and then put it back in and its still doing it what could be causing this if you can help I would really appreciate it
