2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue pumping on the gas peddle to start

2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

my olds now has a starting promblem i have to pump on the gas peddle as i crank over the eng. some times it has to be done on cold starts now some times its needed even when the eng. is warm . can this be the fuel presser ragulator

In the old days, pumping the gas forced the accellerator pump to spray fuel in the engine. Today's cars that doesn't happen. The only thing it does is allow more air to enter the intake. That leads me to believe the fuel mixture is too rich. The added air allows the engine to start. Have you ever noticed if there is black smoke coming from the exhaust when you start it?
