Engine Performance problem
1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

This car ran great until recently. It started having trouble starting up. We replaced fuel filter, spark plugs and cables, ignition control module, and had the plugged cadilactic converter cut out. What happens, is if it starts up, it sounds extremely rough, like it is not getting enough gas. If you can get it moving and rev it high enough by babying it, it will run great and run perfect until you shut it off and try starting it again. Once it has cooled down for hours, it can start again. It seems to have more and more trouble starting the more you use it in a given day. The problem is becomming more frequent now. We took it to the mechanic twice and it has been a waste of money. Any ideas?

I'm not one of the mechanics here but, I'll give it a try:

Possibly a fuel pump starting to go out. Turn the key on but don't start it and listen for a hum from the pump. It should only hum for a couple seconds.

When it refuses to start, listen for the hum again. If it is not there, the pump is to blame.

You can also disconnect the fuel line at the filter and crank the engine to see if fuel is going through the line.

The only reason I suspect the pump is due to it not wanting to re-start until it sits and cools down.

You might want to try another mechanic-- get a second opinion. It's free -look for a local repair center that's been in business at least 20 years and then look up on your local Consumer Reviews pages online - to see if they are reputable before you go there. Yelp is a good source for that. At least it weeds out the problem makers and others you don't want to go to. Sort of word of mouth online.
