Noises problem
1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

This started a day ago. The normal revving sound in my car got significantly louder. A louder humming than usual. But only when I take off from a dead stop. The noise doesn't continue once the car switches into second gear or when coasting and hitting the gas pedal again. I just want to get some ideas as to where the noise is coming from so I can go to a shop and get it fixed before its to late.

Does the sound seem to be coming from the engine compartment or transmission area? Does it change if you turn or let off the gas?

No it does not make noise when turning unless i'm taking off from a dead stop and turning together. And yes if I release the gas pedal before it shifts into the next gear and start to coast the noise does seem to stop. But still wouldn't be able to tell you if its coming from the transmission or engine.

It sounds like a bearing issue. Because I am not there, I can't say which one. What I recommend (and I hate doing this) is have you take it to a trans shop and ask one of the techs to test drive it. They should be able to recognize the sound and at least give you an idea where it is coming from. However, based on your description, I strongly feel it is transmission related.
