My oil pressure light kicked on when I was driving. Should I get my oil change first or just have a diagnostic done instead? I’ve added a quart of oil but that didn’t work.

Hi,

Is there any knocking or ticking from the engine? Also, if the present oil is full it shouldn't cause the light to come on, unless it is so dirty it is more sludge like.

If there is no noise from the engine, there is a good chance it is a bad oil pressure sensor. If you determine it is the sensor, here are the directions for replacement. The first pic below shows location and the next two correlate with the directions.

Removal and Installation
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Remove the cooling fan assembly.
3. Disconnect the engine oil pressure (EOP) switch electrical connector.
4. Remove the EOP switch.
To install, tighten to 18 Nm (13 lb-ft).
5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Apply thread sealant with PTFE to the EOP switch threads prior to installation.

Please note that if you are hearing noise from the engine, do not drive it. That would indicate the pressure is extremely low and it will cause internal engine damage.

Let me know.

I have not heard any noises. I just got the oil and filter changed. It is still on. I'm changing the sensor out next weekend. Hopefully that does that job. Thanks for your advice.

Hi,

If you aren't hearing any noise from the engine, that's a good thing. That tells me that although the light is on, the engine actually has pressure. If it didn't, you would hear a lot of noise coming from it.

If you have a chance, let me know if the sensor takes care of the issue. Also, if you need help or have questions, I'm here.

Take care,
Joe
