Vehicle has been going through oil like crazy half a quart every 250-300 miles. No leaks found. Dealer recommends top end combustion chamber cleaning svc which is not cheap after 1,000 mile oil consumption test is completed. My question is, would carbon build up cause vehicle to go thru so much oil?

Good afternoon,

They are recommending that service because the rings may be frozen on the pistons. When that happens the rings will not seal the cylinder and oil will burn.

I would suggest getting it done because otherwise, you are talking about a major engine overhaul.

When you say "the rings will not seal the cylinder and oil will burn" would the burning oil result in smoke from the exhaust or would there b a smell of burning oil? The engine is still under Hyundai’s 100,000 mile warranty so I was questioning the dealer requiring the cleaning before they’ll even consider it a warranty claim. To have to complete the 1,000 mile consumption test only to then be required to have the cleanout service performed which if it does not resolve the issue will the dealer go forward with a warranty claim kind of feels like they’re stringing me along trying to get to that 100,000 mile first.

This will be a warranty claim under the 100,000 plan. They have to follow procedures so the company will pay the dealer.

I would do the 1,000 mile test as they cannot submit a claim until this is done.

They will also require service records for oil changes as well. If you missed 1 service for any reason, they can deny the warranty anyway. Some dealers will stand behind that and some will not.

As far as the usage, it will not smoke as the muffler and the cat converter will consume the oil and prevent most of the smoke. You may smell the oil in the exhaust since it is in both of those components.

Is this a turbo?

I attached the TSB with the guidelines for the dealer to check before approval of the warranty. There is no way around this if you want it fixed under warranty.

A compression test will verify if the rings are bad.

This is not a turbo. I appreciate the guidelines you’ve attached, but need a little clarity regarding the flow chart on the first page. One side is the warranty/goodwill flow, the other side is customer pay. If I’m still under warranty why would I be required to pay for the combustion cleaning service?

They need to determine if you qualify for a warranty. If you do, then they will do it for free.

Remember, you will need all the service records if they request them. That will be the determining factor if they will cover it under warranty.

Hi everyone. I am having the same issue right now with my 2018 Hyundai Sonata SE. Its a very frustrating situation. I did the 1,000 miles test and oil was low by.97 quarts. Now dealer is telling me I have to do the oil chamber cleaning which I have to pay out of pocket. Which don't see why I have to pay for that because I'm still under warranty. So Patty I was wondering and would appreciate if you would tell me what was the end result in your case. Thank you!
