Hi guys, my wife's car has had an oil consumption issue for quite a while now, and it's usually at the rate of being almost dry on oil by the next oil change sometimes a little sooner. I work 2 jobs so it's very hard to really look at the engine, I kind of thought maybe it was the turbo seals leaking but there all this oil on the valve cover that seems to maybe coming from the little plastic box next to the coils, I'm thinking maybe it's got the PCV valve in it and some sort of oil/air separator, I have noticed the air filter has had some oil on it before when I was able to change it and I'm going to try and get time to change it again. I attached a picture of what the top of the engine looks like as of right now, whatever it could be I can replace it myself it's just finding it that I have an issue with because these Fiat engines are finicky, thanks guys!

Hi,

It does look wet. As far as your concerns, how many miles do you drive between oil changes? I ask because the manufacturer indicates it is acceptable to use 1 quart in 1500 miles. The system holds 4 quarts, so if you are going more than 6K miles between changes, it could be low. Additionally, make sure they are using a 5W40 synthetic oil. If they are installing something different, it can cause this issue.

The part you are referring to is an oil vapor separator, so it could be causing a leak. Check to make sure the hose that connects to the separator isn't leaking or damaged.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely check out those hoses, I was thinking of checking the PCV valve as well, and it's also due for an oil change, I'm not sure how many miles she goes between, she doesn't drive maybe 2 or 3,000 maximum between, it does call for synthetic 5-40 and that's the only oil I ever put in it, I'm going to change the air filter out too and I'll let you know what I find there too, thanks again!

Hi,

You are very welcome. I suspect the hoses I mentioned may be causing the issue for you. It shouldn't use 4 quarts of oil in 2 - 3,000 miles.

Let me know.

Joe
