My question is a general one: is high mileage oil beneficial and worth it or can regular Walmart oil be used(5W20)

Hi and thanks for using 2carpros. Com

High mileage oils offer things that conventional oils do not. Additives such as friction enhancers and seal and gasket conditioners which is supposed to help prevent oil leaks do offer benefits.

Now, if you have leaks, don't expect the high mileage oil to fix the problem. Anytime a seal or gasket has failed, the only way to fix it right is to replace it. There are, however, products that are designed to stop oil leaks. In essence, they cause seals to swell for a period of time but are not a permanent fix.

If you have no leaks, high mileage may prolong the life of seals and gaskets, so that is a good thing. But, they don't stop a leak.

With all of that being said, at the present mileage, if there are no leaks and you are trying to extend the life of seals and internal components, it can help. Is it a requirement? No.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Joe
