I was tightening my factory sub in rear with car running, smelled burning wires and all speakers quit working. Pulled and checked some fuses in front driver side and all were good, but car shut off and won't crank up again. What could I have done? Checked relays and fuses are good.

Hi Brandy,

Just because the fuses are good doesn't mean you didn't melt some wires. I would suggest trying to locate where you smelled the burning wires. If the wire coating was melted and you have wires shorted out, they may not pop the fuse.

The only thing that pops fuses is when there is to much current running through them. However, if something else melted the coating and they are now shorted, it may not blow a fuse.

Based on what you stated here, this is the most likely cause. Other than that, you will need to start with testing your starter circuit and see if you are getting power the starter. If not, we can go from there.

Let me know if you find any melted wires. I included the starting system wiring diagram in case you need to review the system. There is a chance you have an issue with the TRS but again based on the burning wires smell, I would start with trying to locate the source and repair then retest.

Thank you. I hooked a code reader up to it and it says crankshaft sensor a circuit malfunction. But I was told that would not keep my car from starting just from running.

Unfortunately, that is not accurate. The car requires a crank sensor input in order to know where the engine position is so that it knows when to fire each plug and injector. Without this information the car will not start. Take a look at this document and as you will see the crank sensor is an input to the PCM to operate the ignition system.

Let me know what specific code it is and I can send you the diagnosis for it but this needs to be fixed and then retest the vehicle. However, once this is repaired, I assume the car will be able to start.

Okay. I attached the test for this code. It is pretty lengthy and involved. It could be a sensor, wiring, connector, PCM, or possibly a combination so you need to run through the test.

Unfortunately, there is no way I can tell you what the issue is without running this test. The fact that you smelled wires burning I would expect you to find a wiring issue but again, that is just what makes most sense based on this info.

Just to clarify, a crank sensor that is beginning to fail would cause a stall and not necessarily cause a no start. However, one that has failed or has a wiring issue the PCM is not getting a signal on engine position then it will not start.
