After having my timing chain replaced, I noticed that I had less power than before. I can only get up to 45 MPH and I have a knocking sound, could they have made a mistake on the timing marks?

Hi,

Yes, that sounds like what happened. My concern is that you hear a knocking, I believe this engine is a dual overhead cam engine. If that is correct, the engine is considered an interference engine.

What that means is there isn't enough clearance between the pistons and the valves when the valves are open. If the timing is too far off, it will cause internal damage and usually requires the replacement of the cylinder head at a minimum.

Since you have the knock, I think they have the timing close enough to run, but it's off enough to lose compression and it sounds like there is contact being made in the engine.

If it was mine, I would check the timing before running it again. If you are uncomfortable doing that, I would contact the shop that did the work and tell them your concerns. Explain you lost power and now there is a knocking sound. Explain you know the engine is an interference engine and don't want to further damage anything.

They really should have the vehicle towed to their shop for inspection. If you want, you can record the noise it is making and upload it for me to hear. Also, if you are comfortable checking the timing, let me know. I will also say there are two timing chains on this vehicle.

Did someone tell you the chain needed to be replaced? A timing chain, unlike a belt, will usually last the life of the engine.

Let me know.

Joe
