My 1990 Tercel ez will only start if gas or starting fluid is applied and even then it will not stay running. It seemed at first to have a fouled out spark plug but after replacing the old ones the problem is worse. What could cause this issue other than the pump?

Hi,

The fuel pump on this vehicle is mechanical and mounted on the cylinder head. If you are certain the pump is good, there could be a worn lobe on the camshaft that is meant to operate the lever/plunger on the pump. If it isn't being moved, there won't be fuel available.

I attached directions below for testing fuel pressure and the pump's operation. Take a look at them and let me know if you are comfortable performing them.

Also, if you haven't already, you may want to remove the pump and plunge it by hand to see if it produces fuel. You will see that in the directions.

Let me know what you find or if you have questions.

Take care,

Joe
