Seems to be stuck in gear not sure but seems like second or third and the check engine light is on?

Also the dash display which normally shows PRND and C (which I believe is for cruise and sport option) only shows PRND and the C seem to have disappeared.

But initially when it happens I switch the engine off and restart it which seems to solve the problem for a while but the problem is now constant also now when I put it in D or R there is a little thump.

Did you check the fuses are they okay? Also I assume the code is a P code? Which is an EGR problem which doesn't make sense. Is this a Euro Car?

Road tested vehicle, found vehicle slams into gear when selector is moved into forward or reverse ranges, and transmission does not shift. Performed quick test, no faults found in ME, found only event 1405 no CAN message received from transmission control unit. Transmission control unit is not showing up on quick test, ABR also showing no CAN message received from engine control module or electronic transmission control unit (event 6106). Tries to access transmission control unit. Communication not possible.
