My Xterra died last friday at a stop light and would not turn back on. The mechanic took at a look at the fuel pump first thinking that was the issue. He said that the pressure was at a good level but the SUV still would not start. He then pull the distributor cap and saw a lot of carbon build up in there and recommended we try this next. To my knowledge that was replaced yesterday. I have been doing some research on my own and have come across a lot of articles stating almost all the same issues my wife and I were having. Smell of rich fuel in the cockpit every once an while. Shaking for a little while then going away. Sometimes it acted like it didn't want to hold an idle but after giving it gas for a couple minutes it ran fine. The gas consumption was also an issue and from what I have read also comes into pay with the Mass Air flow sensor. Any thoughts?

thanks for you help,

Nathan

Check the injectors, you smell fuel but the mechanic says that the pressure is good, so we need to look at what ever is after the pressure regulator, as far as fuel goes, and that is the injectors, probably flooding. My first guess was the crank sensor. Or cam sensor. But check the injectors to see if one or more are faulty
