Engine Mechanical problem

Hi Everyone,
I hope you can help me out with this matter. About 4 years ago I took my car to the dealer to get my Catilytic Converter replaced. They put in a brand new one that took half my pay check away :( they are way too expensive. About a week ago my service engine light came on and I took it to an independent mechanic and was informed an hour ago that AGAIN my catilytic converter needs to be replaced and it would cost me another $800. I am at my wits end with this. How is a person supposed to rely on something that needs a part changed every 4 years and it will cost them an arm and a leg. Does anyone know what causes this problem. What I can do to prevent it in the future. The mechanic told me that Nissan catilytic converters are just horrible. PLEASE HELP!!!
