Hi.. Im looking to buy a used car & came across a 1997 Nissan Maxima that has 140k miles. it seems to be in verry good condition but i noticed that the check engine lite was on. the owner took it to a mechanic and they assured him that it was only the speedometer head that caused the check engine lite. what kind of problems should i expect from this? is it a major problem or a minor problem?

I have the same problem on the same car, and just got back from the dealer, who quoted me $610 to replace it with a new one and reprogram it.

I asked what would be harm of not fixing it, beyond the speedometer not working: it would fail the emissions inspection here in Georgia. Not that it would pollute any more or less, just that it would automatically fail the test.
