Hello,
This could be due to a faulty crank position sensor.
Over time with heat and vibration from the engine the crank sensor can lose its internal calibration and that can trigger engine shutdown. After the shutdown the engine may or may not start back up.
The crank sensor can be tested using a multimeter and checking the resistance between the pins. It should be 432-528 ohms at 77 F.

If the engine light is illuminated, it will be a good idea to scan for the trouble codes as that can help with the diagnostics.
