Well, the other day we took it to a mechanic and he said that it was the shifters that we going bad. What are shifters and is this a major repair that should be fixed immediately. He said that it would cost about $700 is that the range for that type of repair. How does one fix it for themself?

Is this a manual or automatic transmission, and is the noise present when driving or only when still?

The car makes the sound when it is still, mainly when it's started after a lond period of time. After we drive for awhile and sit the sound is gone. Although sometimes it does seem like it wants to shut off but it doesn't. The car is a automatic transmission--the kind that you just put in drive and that's it.

Does the noise seem to come from underneath the car or from the engine area (pop the hood to be sure) and what does the noise sound like? The more info you describe the easier it's for us to figure it out.

The sound is coming from underneath the hood. It sounds like a click-click noise and it fast. It under the hood on the passenger side. A mechanic from a body shop just looked at it and said it was the shifters
