After replacing the complete strut assembly there is a grinding noise when braking or turning?

I have replaced my complete strut assembly on all four wheels, the lower control arms on the front, both CV joints on the front, the sway bar link/or stabilizing bar link on the passenger side, all the rims and brand-new tires. Oh, I forgot the bearings and knuckle on passenger side and the bushings for the sway bar on the front. It is making a horrible grinding noise on the front driver's side when we brake or turn in either direction. I'm not sure if it's the sway bar link on the driver's side or the tie rod ends on the driver's side but if you could listen to it and help me, I would be so grateful.

Hi,

Is the grinding noise constant with vehicle speed? Is there anything you can do to change the pitch or how loud it is?

For example, when you hear it, if you apply the brakes, does it change? Does it only happen when it is turning?

If possible, record it and upload the noise so I can hear it. Also, you indicated replacing the CV joints. Did you replace the entire half-shaft? Did you properly torque the axle nut?

Let me know as much as you can.

Take care,

Joe

Yes, I replaced the entire CV joint and tightened it to specifications, both sides and both sway bar links in the front, the lower control arms in front, the only thing it seems like I haven't replaced is the truck. Every time I brake and turn in either direction left or right. Only makes the noise when running. I turned the wheels with the vehicle off and nothing. I even changed the bushings for the sway bar, I have inspected the sway bar itself and it is in good shape. I haven't replaced any of the tie rods front, inner or outer. I have noticed that the boot on the caliper bolt is messed up, but I checked all the rest of my brakes system, and everything looks good there too. I can't put much more into this vehicle before my relationship gets ruined. I love to work on vehicles, but this is life making me sorry I said anything again.

Hi,

The boot that was damaged on the caliper slide, was it in good condition prior to the other work that was done? I listened to your video, and it does sound like something rubbing the brake rotor. Also, is the sound coming from the side where the boot is damaged? If so, remove the caliper and make sure things are put together properly. Also, make sure the brake pads move in the caliper mount and the slide pins move easily (specifically the one with a damaged boot).

Also, check around the brake rotors to see if there is any evidence of something rubbing as well as the inside of the wheel.

Let me know.

Joe

I thought it sounded like the front driver's side brake too but every time I look at it, it looks good. I'm just going to have to lift it up and take the wheel off and have Zach push the brakes a few times so I can see what is going on. The boot that the pin goes into just got pushed in between the caliper and the rotor but it doesn't look like there are any holes in it and when I put the pins back in they went in fairly easy. I'm just not sure if I put them back together correctly. I will keep you updated on my progress, but you have given me a lot to consider and check out. Thank you

Melissa, you are very welcome. As far as the slide pins are concerned, they just bolt in. I attached a pic below.

When I service brakes, I remove the rubber dist covers and spray the inside of the caliper and the slide pins with brake cleaner. Then I clean out where they go into the caliper with a rag to make sure all dirt is removed.

Once that is done, using brake grease, I relubricate the pins and where they press into the caliper. I don't think you put it together wrong, but I do want to point out that the slide pins are different.

One of the pins will have something like a rubber boot at the end. That is to help release the brake pads when you take your foot off the pedal. Make sure that one is the top slide. It may not be releasing enough if it is at the bottom, and you are hearing the pads making contact. (See pic below)

Also, before you take anything apart, lift that wheel and see if it turns easily. Do it when the steering is turned (the point where you would normally hear the noise) and then straight to see if it goes away.

Let me know what I can do to help.

Joe

I got my brakes fixed and my calipers replaced with new ones. I haven't had any more problems since I got all of the air out of the system. I am still having problems with the suspension and stabilizer bar/sway bar and the location of it. I have been helping my mother with a lot of the house projects that she has been trying to get done but needed another person to finish them and I haven't been keeping you up to par with my results on my truck but I'm trying to rectify that now. I really appreciate all of the help and advice you have given me and I want to keep you in the loop because other than that and a donation to your website you don't ask for anything else like other sites do and you have helped me the most. The other sites are so out of it that I had to correct them on the advice they want to charge me for but don't know anything about. I thank you so much.

Melissa,

Thanks for the update. Also, your mother's needs are much more important than a vehicle.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Also, a donation is not required by any means.

Take care and I hope you are having a good summer.

Joe
