I have a Hatchback and the Service Engine Soon light stayed on. I had the dealer check it out and he said the gas pedal sensor that opens the throttle is bad. He said the whole gas pedal assembly must be replaced for about $500.00. The only symptom I noticed is that the gas pedal is not as responsive as usual especially at low speeds, it feels like I have to push it a little further down. (The car also stalled three times in the past ten days while driving, but he said that is unlikely to be related?). Question: must I replace the gas pedal and sensor, or can I ignore it?

Hello, I am Danny.

I would suggest to not ignore it as it is a safety issue. Most vehicles have a mechanical type linkage that connects gas pedal to the engine however, your vehicle has an electrical circuit including a sensor having your gas pedal to act as a potentiometer. This is know as drive-by-wire. Due to normal wear and tear you are already noticing the symptoms of failure. Your vehicle is designed so as once complete failure happens the ECM (Engine Control Module) will put you car into limp mode. The car will operate at lower speeds than normal. I have attached a description of limp mode. I would suggest to replace the pedal to restore performance and reduce the risk of break down. Hope this helps and feel free to ask any questions if needed. Thanks for using 2CarPros. Com.

Thank you. Good to know! Does $500.00 sound like a usual rate to place the gas pedal assembly?

Hello again.
Sounds about right. Shop labor is around $100.00 an hour (not Nissan, they are more) and $350.00 part plus tax. I m guessing. Thanks again for using 2CarPros.
