2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse engine just stopped

I was driving my car. No noticeable noises or engine problems. Stopped at a stop sign and turned left kind of quickly (speeding up to enter traffic). The car just turned off. Pulled over on the side of the road and tried to start it again. It would crank but not turn over. What could be wrong?

I am not a master machanic by no means. I did how ever give it a little thought and if I were in your position I would think it would be a good idea to take your timing cover off and have a look.
