How do I know weather the front or rear converter is bad?

Only if after the check engine light is scanned and it gives code for catalyst system malfunction. If your vehicle's check engine light is on, please o to either Autozone or CSK/O'Reilly and have then scan the computer for codes.

Advise us as to the code numbers and descriptions.
