Trans. Shifting problems for 87 3.8 V6 Mercury Sable

There is a ceramic looking sensor that mounts to a bracket on top of the transmission. This sensor or relay controls shifting. Can you tell me what this part is called, so I can buy this part? Car is not driveable. Thank you.
