When shifting gears the car hesitates for about half a second in neutral before it locks in to the new gear. The check engine light is off when the car starts, but it comes on as soon as it changes gears. If the car is accelerating slowly the hesitation can't really be felt, but if it is accelerating a little more quickly (not flooring it) you can feel it pull back during the hesitation. The handbook says that the check engine light comes on when a problem with the power train is detected. Beyond the probable cause, is further damage being done if it is driven as is?
