I have a 2008 2WD 6cyl Mercury Mariner. My AC twice has had this same problem. Sometimes I can turn it on and it barely blow out. Today I had it all the way up on max and it wouldn't blow air out at all. When I took it off of max it would blow "puffs" of cold air. (I have the automatic dual climate controls) When I got home I turned the car off and cranked it right back up and it worked fine. This is the second time it's done this in the past few weeks. Any ideas?

try pressing off and floor at the same time then auto...if there are problems the unit knows about it should give trouble codes on the display...2008? If that's right have you gone to a Mercury dealer? Should be under warrantee?
