2000 Mercury Mystique noise at the top of the engine

There is a plastic cover on the top side of the engine just above the fan belts that is making noise. What is under neath that plastic cover? Another belt? It sound like it may be a frayed belt and slapping the plastic cover making the loud noise! Any idea's, thanks, Woody Woodburn

Are you talking about the timming belt cover? this covers the front and top rounded piece? Have you changed the timming belt yet? 60,000 is the recommended interval, you could be pushing you luck!

Yep it's the Timing Belt gone bad.
