2004 Mercury Marquis V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 99k miles

in an earlier post and reply it was suggested I bang the converter with a rubber mallet to see if the heat shiled is loose vs the converter being bad - stupid question but once I do this how do I interpret the sound (i hear a slight buzzing or tinging after I bang on it)

Hi there,

Yes this is a bit difficult to determine, normally a heat shield will be a tinny sound and a failed core of the converter if broken away will be a more solid rattle, as the core is of a honeycomb construction it will break up into sizable lumps and this will give a heavier sounding rattle
