I have had a problem recently with my 1989 Mercury's engine turning over but failing to start. It turns over fast and has spark and If I wait long enough it eventually will start as if there were no problems at all. The car will start and run with either but when the either runs out the car dies. It starts most of the time just fine but maybe once a week, or two it will not start and unfortunately leaves me stranded. It is as if something was telling the car not to send fuel to start the engine. The car had the plugs, wires, cap and rotor also changed recently.
I have had it tested by a Ford dealer and there were no codes to indicate a problem and fuel pressures were fine.
Maybe just a coincidence but I thought it could be temperature related because it started to act up last fall but only on the coldest days. (between 40 and 55 degrees F). It also seems to act up when the fuel guage reaches half or lower. I have also had the low fuel light come on a couple of times when there was plenty of fuel in the tank. I can hear the pump whirl when the key is turned on. I would really appreciate any help
