1981 Mercedes Benz 300sd 227000 miles

there is a lot of old gunky oil in my air filter and the car wants to kick over but it cant--I bought it like this and will buy another air filter today--i want to know what else I can do to check it (battery is charged) and so far the exhaust is kinda white and there is a bit of gas coming out of it so I know the gas is getting there. Whre should I check to see if its in bad shape so I can get it started--I have no records of it but it looks to be in otherwise very good shape

You are talking about gas are you sure this is a sedan diesel? "SD"
