Mazda Protege 2001, 200K miles. Engine runs well at low speeds but knocks at high speed and "Check engine" light comes on. Mechanic suspects I might need "valve work" but not sure. I can drive around town, but not on the freeway because of the hard knocking sound at high speed. What do you think ?

200K miles is in the border of its life-meaning an engine rebuild

Where is that knocking coming from the engine- Is it clacking, tapping or more like a thumping or bumping.

Can be a valvetrain, engine bearings, clogged oil galleries, and weak oil pump that the oil is not reaching all the way up.

Sometimes Doing an engine flush thouroughly might help.

What is the OBD2 code

Have the knock sensor check and ignition timing

HTH Good Luck!
