93 Mazda Protege code 62

I've got a 93 Mazda Protege 4 speed auto with a shifting problem. It occurs when going from 2nd to 3rd gear. When the problem happens, the 2-3 shift has a long slipping feel to it and the hold light will start flashing. I checked for trouble codes and code 62 came up, which I believe indicates a 3-4 shift solenoid problem. The thing is, this problem doesn't always happen. Sometimes the car will go for days without a problem, other times within 10 minutes the problem will pop up. The transmission fluid is up to the proper level and doesn't look or smell burnt. Will changing the fluid and filter and using some Lubegard take care of the problem, or will it require servicing? If it did need servicing, do you know what is involved in fixing the problem, and possibly how much it would cost?

Try the fluid change and filter and see what happens. There's a few sensors that's involve with the tranny-such as the coolant, throttle, and vehicle speed sensors other than the shifting solenoids in the tranny.

It's gotta be an electrical problem, I hope. I've had it out a few times in the past few days and it seems for the first 20 minutes or so, and especially if I don't come to a stop, the transmission will work just fine. After about 15-20 minutes or so then the trouble seems to come up. I notice that when the problem occurs, most often it happens when going between 2nd and 3rd gear, however a few times when at cruising speed, the transmission makes a clunk or some type of noise and will downshift into 3rd and the hold light will start flashing. I've unhooked the battery once, then drove the car til the problem happened, and it's code 62 that's set each time when the transmission acts up.

Hello,

Yes this sounds like a shaft speed sensor has gone out. Here is a video to show you what you are in for when changing the sensor.

Here is what it will be like on your car (below)

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers, Ken
