Millenia Engine Problems

I have a 1995 Mazda Millenia with the 2.5L V6 engine. It has 172k miles. Upon starting, it runs fine. However, once the engine reaches normal operating temperature, it will run poorly. Idles rough (but it always idled somewhat rough), will smoke like it does upon start up. It will seem like it's missing, but appears to have spark in each cylinder. Under low RPM driving, it's impossible to give it gas without it sputtering and hesitating and such. If I give it alot of gas during this time, it'll just bog down and sometimes I hear a pop as if it backfires. It's much less severe once it reaches higher RPMs. I'm guessing it may be a cracked head or blown head gasket, but one symptom I was always told to look for is water/coolent in the oil, but the oil is fine. Could that be it, or is there anything else I should look for?

Sounds to me like one of a few possible problems. It sounds like you might have a bad set of ignition wires, bad dist cap/ rotor or maybe even a split air intake tube (the corrigated looking thing from the air box to the t-body.

You should check the wires very very closely for any burn or arcing marks, especially on the arear's of the wires that are inside the cyl heads.

Also you did not mention wether the engine light was on or off.

Let me know what you find.

First off, sorry about originally posting in the wrong forum. I didn't even think about looking under Ford.

As for the smoke upon startup, it's white, like normal. The plugs, I didn't notice anything odd about them. Granted, I should check them again. I checked them when it first started doing this (roughly a month ago, but I haven't run it more than three times since).

I'll look into the spark plug wires. I never noticed anything odd about them either, but I never inspected them closely. The distributer cap, I was told, was replaced when I bought it (last June, have put 12k miles on it since). How could I tell if it is going bad? As far as the air intake, yes, it has a crack in it. It's been wrapped with electrical tape since I bought it. Never thought much of it. Also, the engine light has not come on during any of this.

Well first thing is first. Make sure there is NO air leaks into that air tube. It will make some rather poor running and stalling conditions
