2005 Mazda6 2.0L Automatic doesn't drive. Yesterday, I parked the car on the street in front of my house and once I turned it off (it was in park and the e-brake was up) I heard a lot of noises coming from the back of the car. I re-started it and when I put it in drive it just WENT BACKWARDS and when I hit the brakes, it just kept going. It wouldn't go forward even when I hit the gas. The ONLY way to stop it from rolling backwards was to put the emergency brake on. What does this mean? Should this be happening to such a new car with low miles?
Also, I should mention that the front axel had to be replaced when the car had only 6,000 miles on it (I don't drive the car hard or anything like that- the axel was faulty). Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

You might have been told this already, but the part that you removed should be the air filter. The colored piece on the side is a filter use reset. Usually when you remove or clean the air filter, you push in the yellow button to reset the guage. The guage is like the bag full on a vaccum cleaner. The more suction the more it registers till it says CLEAN ME. The screen on the bottom is most likely the MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor). If there are no screws around the part you removed then it is problably a lifetime filter at which the best you could do would be blow low pressure air through the top to clean it.
