Brakes problem
2001 Mazda Millenia 140000 miles

Hi,
My brakes were working just fine 24 hours ago. Then I parked my car on an incline and put on my emergency brake. After getting back into the car, putting my emergency brake down, and pulling away, I was barely able to brake the car. Now my car will stop only if I start braking way in advance and I'm going at a slow speed. The brakes are practically not working and it is not safe to drive!

Some observations:
1) The emergency brake light is still lit up on the dashboard.
2)When I pump the foot brake there is no resistance (something to do with brake fluid?), And pumping the brakes repeatedly does nothing to rebuild resistance.
3) Every time I push the foot brake down and then release it there is a single click directly beneath the emergency break lever.

Also, I had my oil changed within the past month and they checked/topped off all my fluids, so I'm not sure why the brake fluid would be low.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I don't have the money for major work on my car, and since I just paid a hefty bill to replace a blown fuse, I would feel very relieved if this was a minor problem with an inexpensive solution!

Thank you in advance,
bailey32

Hi bailey32,

Thank you for the donation.

The handbrake inidicator light staying on could mean the brake fluid level is low and this would cause the brakes to fail.

Top up the brake fluid and bleed the system to get the brakes working again. This is a temporary fix, you would need to check which component is leaking and get it rectified.
